F3: Badoer achieved his first career victory
Brando Badoer achieved his first victory in Formula 3, finishing first in the Sunday race in Monaco. Along with him on the podium were Théophile Naël and Freddy Slater. The Saturday sprint of Formula 3 in Monaco was won by Hiyu Yamakoshi, but he was later disqualified for a car not complying with the technical regulations. Thus, the victory went to Gérard Si. Brad Benavides did not start the Sunday race for medical reasons after a collision in the sprint.
Sunday morning in Monaco greeted the Formula 3 participants with sunny weather. By the time of the start, the air temperature was +20°C, and the asphalt had warmed up to +26°C. Pole holder Théophile Naël started rather unconfidently, and on the short stretch to the first corner, he was overtaken by Brando Badoer, who took the lead. Freddy Slater, Hugo Ugochukwu, Ernesto Rivera, Bruno del Pino, Alessandro Giusti, Pedro Clero, and Gérard Si maintained their positions from third to ninth.
The first lap went much worse for Taponen, who started eleventh. Tuukka could not turn at the 18th corner as he was attacked on the inside by Maciej Gładysz and crashed into the protective barrier. The race ended for the MP Motorsport driver, and the safety car was deployed. The restart was given on the fifth lap out of twenty-seven, and everyone in the top ten maintained their positions. Badoer could not immediately break away from the peloton, and Naël pressured the leader for several laps.
Uhyeon Shin from Hitech received a 10-second Stop&Go for incorrectly occupying a position on the track during the restart. Uhyeon's misfortunes did not end there – while serving his penalty, he exceeded the speed limit in the pit lane, for which he received another 5 seconds. On the twelfth lap, Naël cut the chicane after the tunnel, but this did not lead to a loss of position. Throughout the peloton, individual attempts to overtake were made, but the characteristics of the street circuit did not favor active position exchanges.
On the nineteenth lap, Fernando Barrichello, son of former Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello, returned to the pits with a broken suspension after contact with the barrier at the exit of the 12th corner. By the twentieth lap, Badoer's lead over Naël grew to 3.2 seconds, while the Campos driver was 5.7 seconds ahead of Slater. In this order, the top three completed the remaining laps to the finish.
Brando Badoer, in his second season, achieved his first victory in Formula 3. Théophile Naël climbed onto the podium for the first time this season, while for Freddy Slater, the podium was already his second after finishing second in the Sunday race in Melbourne. Hugo Ugochukwu's fourth place allowed him to remain the leader in the overall standings. The third round of the Formula 3 season will take place in Barcelona from June 12-14.
