Pierre Gasly: What is happening right now is wrong.
Pierre Gasly is one of those participants in the Monaco Grand Prix whose race results literally brought him to tears, as he crossed the finish line in third place, but due to two 5-second penalties, he dropped to seventh. The Alpine F1 team attempted to contest these steward decisions.
When Gasly crossed the finish line, he was still unaware of the penalties, and the news that he was deprived of a podium in Monaco was a real blow for him.
Pierre Gasly (7th): "I doubt anything can hurt me more. I have worked for ten years for moments like this (in fact, Pierre's phrase was much more expressive and used non-parliamentary language), and today we did everything to get on the podium in front of all the fans. I believe we should not be deprived of such moments for unfair reasons.
What is happening now is wrong, and I know for sure that our speed limiter in the pit lane was set to less than 60 km/h. I also know that I activated it long before crossing the line in both cases. Probably, these are the simplest settings that exist in a Formula 1 car.
But when three or four teams receive penalties for speeding in the pit lane... I hope this will make the specialists figure out exactly what is happening – simply because it is wrong.
I currently have no answers, I am completely upset and very worried. I crossed the finish line third after starting from 9th position, we did everything that needed to be done, and we were able to show a confident pace. At the last restart, we were already among the contenders for a good result. I was fifth, but in the first corner, I managed to overtake Isaac Hadjar...
I live for moments like this, but definitely not to receive unfair penalties, not to be deprived of a podium."
Franco Colapinto (15th): "Not the best result, and I am not satisfied with how the weekend went. In previous races, we had results, and I was happy with the car, but here everything changed. My team and I need to work to understand what this is related to.
I had problems with balance, and I didn't feel confident on the brakes. We knew that starting from fourteenth place in Monaco would leave few opportunities to recover. I made a pit stop in the middle of the race and lost positions compared to those who stopped earlier.
The safety car and red flags caused me to lose all positions and chances in the race. I knew that a penalty awaited me, like many others, for speeding in the pit lane.
At the restart, Fernando Alonso pushed me into Hülkenberg, and I hit his car, damaging my front wing. Nico then hit Carlos Sainz's car, which also sustained damage. After that, Carlos was slowly driving in the middle of the track, I tried to turn, and there was contact between our cars.
It was a long and exhausting race, and the weekend as a whole was too. We have a lot of work ahead to come back stronger in Barcelona in a few days."
