F3: Theophile Nael achieved his first career victory
The Formula 3 race in Barcelona concluded with a victory for Théophile Naël. Alongside him on the podium were Hiya Yamakoshi and the leader of the individual standings, Ugo Ugochukwu.
Sunday morning greeted the drivers with sunny and warm weather. By the time of the start, the air had warmed up to +23°C, and the asphalt temperature was +33°C.
At the start, pole holder Théophile Naël maintained his lead, but in the first corner, Hiya Yamakoshi, who started third and managed to overtake Ugo Ugochukwu, went off track and returned ahead of Naël. However, before the fourth corner, Yamakoshi lifted off the throttle and returned the first place to Naël.
Bruno del Pino had a good start, moving up from sixth to fourth place. Taito Kato lost five positions and fell back to tenth. Freddy Slater moved up from tenth to seventh place.
On the third lap, the virtual safety car was deployed to clear debris from the track after a collision between Uhyun Shin and Evan David, who went to the pits for a new front wing.
By the fifth lap of twenty-five, Slater had gained another position, moving up to sixth place by overtaking Ernesto Rivera, while Yamakoshi set the fastest lap.
On the eighth lap, yellow flags were waved after DAMS teammates Nicola Lacorte and Gérard Si collided in the tenth corner. As a result of the incident, Lacorte's race ended.
On the ninth lap, Slater received a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage over competitors by going off track on the first lap. On the next lap, Slater gained another position by overtaking Badoer.
On the twelfth lap, the virtual safety car was deployed again to remove a fairly large piece of debris from the start-finish straight.
By the halfway point, Naël had not managed to pull away from Yamakoshi by more than a second, so the Japanese driver constantly pressured the leader by staying within DRS range.
On the sixteenth lap, del Pino overtook Ugochukwu in the battle for third place. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver could not create a sufficient gap, and on the twentieth lap, Ugochukwu reclaimed third place with an attack in the first corner.
On the twenty-first lap, Slater went wider than necessary out of the last corner, allowing Brando Badoer to overtake him. On the twenty-fourth lap, Badoer moved up to fourth place, passing del Pino before the first corner. On the final lap, del Pino lost another position, letting Enzo Deligny through.
Théophile Naël confidently brought the race to his first victory in Formula 3. Yamakoshi, with the fastest lap, finished second and stepped onto the podium for the first time. Ugo Ugochukwu's third place allowed him to remain the leader of the individual standings.
