Carlos Sainz: Lewis deserves all the praise.

Carlos Sainz: Lewis deserves all the praise.

Carlos Sainz has four victories to his name, all of which were achieved with the Ferrari team during the years when the Spanish driver was Charles Leclerc's teammate. And Carlos understands the strong emotions Lewis Hamilton experienced yesterday, as he stood atop the podium for the first time in the red uniform of the Italian team.

By the way, Sainz was the one who secured the previous victory for Scuderia – it was in Mexico in the fall of 2024, and shortly after that, he had to part ways with Ferrari, with Hamilton taking his place.

"In this sport, there are no secrets," the Williams driver told Marca. "We all compete at a very high level, but there are differences in driving styles. Additionally, some cars work effectively, while others do not. A driver's skill is demonstrated in how they can adapt, in understanding how to work with different Formula 1 cars.

I was in a similar situation at Ferrari in 2022. I didn't like that car at all, but I managed to adapt, after which I performed quite well in 2023 and 2024. Moments like these become defining in your career.

You can move to a new team, and if the car doesn't suit you, you might spend three years there without being able to adapt. Or the team may not adapt their car to you. However, if you join a team and you like the car, then a completely divine feeling emerges.

Our sport is becoming increasingly complex, and Lewis deserves all the praise for being able to completely turn the situation around. He was fortunate that Formula 1 transitioned to a new technical regulation. If he had continued driving last year's car, we wouldn't have seen this version of Hamilton."

Of course, Carlos also commented on the disappointing results of his home weekend, as he finished only 12th in Barcelona: "Such stories have been ongoing since the beginning of the season: we perform well in qualifying, we manage to start the race excellently, but our car doesn't allow us to capitalize on that.

I try to adapt to the equipment we actually have, but while I was able to reach the podiums last year, that is not happening now. But I continue to work, even though the second third of the season promises to be challenging, as we have races ahead on tracks that don't suit us very well..."

Nevertheless, in every weekend, we must achieve the best possible results, even though everything indicates that our car is far from where it should be.
