If you were hoping to get a 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee with off-road capabilities, those plans were thwarted earlier this year when Jeep unexpectedly removed it from its lineup, alongside the quiet discontinuation of its plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain that was standard on both models. However, they are making a return—almost. Both the Overland and Trailhawk will be back for the 2027 model year, indicating that Jeep intends to fulfill its promise to reintroduce the 4x4 variants before the end of 2026.
“The Grand Cherokee is a fundamental part of the Jeep brand – one of the most recognized and trusted SUVs worldwide,” stated Jeep brand CEO Bob Broderdorf in the announcement. “The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk perfectly captures the go-anywhere, do-anything spirit of this brand. It’s an SUV that accommodates your daily routine and is designed to excel off-road with the esteemed Trail Rated badge, remaining true to the brand’s authentic 4x4 heritage.
“For the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, this model has a distinct role in the lineup: to merge genuine off-road capability with the premium, refined features it has been known for since its inception 25 years ago,” Broderdorf added. “No other SUV delivers what the Overland achieves with the value of the Jeep brand.”
Jeep’s announcement did not indicate any significant changes for the 2027 model. This is understandable given that the vehicle was updated for 2026, and the Overland and Trailhawk were temporarily sidelined because they were previously available only with the 4xe hybrid option. Despite some contrary rumors, the I4 has not entirely replaced the base V6—at least, not at this point.
Indeed, we contacted Jeep for confirmation, and a company spokesperson verified that both the standard Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L will still feature the Pentastar V6 in their entry-level trims (Laredo and Laredo X). Upgrading to the Laredo Altitude provides the 2.0-liter Hurricane-4, with no availability of the V6 option. This remains consistent for all higher trims as well.
The resurgence of the Overland and Trailhawk models will restore some off-road legitimacy to the Grand Cherokee; after all, what is a Jeep if it isn’t “Trail-Rated”? The Overland comes equipped with a two-speed transfer case (essential for crawling), air suspension (including a maximum clearance off-road setting), hill descent control, and what Jeep terms “semi-active” dampers (indicating it’s not a fully adaptive suspension).
The Trailhawk includes a rear electronic limited-slip differential (though not a complete locker), sturdier tires, an integrated “TrailCam” exterior camera mode with a rear washer, and six high-strength steel skid plates.
Production for the Overland and Trailhawk will resume this fall, and we can expect more information regarding pricing when Jeep is ready to distribute them to showrooms.
