Barcelona is determined to secure a permanent future in Formula 1.

Barcelona remains optimistic about making an annual return to the Formula 1 calendar, despite agreeing to alternate years with Spa-Francorchamps starting in 2028. This statement follows Royal Spanish Automobile Federation president Manuel Avino's remarks that Barcelona might return as soon as 2027 should ongoing issues in the Middle East compel Formula 1 to modify its plans. Catalan president Salvador Illa emphasized that authorities are still striving for a more prominent role in Formula 1. "We are not dismissing any possibilities," he declared at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday. "Given the prestige of Barcelona and Catalonia, as evidenced this week, we can aspire to whatever we desire."

Barcelona has recently reached a new agreement covering the years 2028, 2030, and 2032, sharing its calendar spot with Spa. Nonetheless, Illa does not consider the alternating arrangement as a definitive conclusion. "Only two nations host more than one F1 Grand Prix— the United States and Spain. That also underscores the confidence in Catalonia."

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, speaking to AS newspaper in Barcelona, pointed out that local authorities had previously expected the race to be assured, irrespective of the level of investment. "I can say this because I was straightforward with my friends in Barcelona," he noted. "When a significant promoter requires government backing to invest, there was a time when Barcelona mistakenly believed they had this race assured no matter the investment made and the improvements needed."

Domenicali remarked that perspectives have shifted significantly. "Now, those involved at the government level and within the promoter's team have done an outstanding job and have successfully regained the race. There are some highly influential people involved, and I appreciate the President of Catalonia for his dedication," he added. "They were committed to reaching this agreement, working diligently to secure the future of a circuit that truly deserves to be part of F1."

Illa also shared that he had recent discussions with Domenicali during the Spanish GP weekend. "I just met with Domenicali, and we had a very constructive conversation," stated the Catalan leader. "He appeared very pleased and satisfied with the developments here. I look to the future, and I am confident that we will have Formula 1 in Barcelona for many years ahead."
