London and Milan compete for the upcoming F1 launch event.
Formula 1 may be looking to bring back its controversial all-team launch concept. The sport hosted its first joint season presentation at London’s O2 Arena in early 2025 as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Formula 1, uniting every team for a televised event prior to the season start. This idea has sparked mixed reactions among fans and figures in the paddock, but reports indicate that Formula 1 is contemplating a revival.
According to London’s City AM, Milan is being considered as a potential venue for a future event, possibly in 2027. Nevertheless, London’s O2 Arena is actively advocating to retain the event in the UK. "Definitely," said AEG International's senior vice president for sport, Gael Caselli, when asked if the venue would be glad to host Formula 1 again. "It was an amazing event, truly. We are having discussions with them.
"We’ve heard they are exploring different options - I can’t say for sure if that will be in London, another city, or a different format." Formula 1 has not yet confirmed the return of the group launch concept, although Stefano Domenicali has suggested that it could happen.
While the event attracted significant commercial interest and filled the 20,000-seat arena, it also posed considerable logistical difficulties as it required all teams, drivers, and senior executives to converge in one place before the season commenced. The format itself generated mixed feelings, with some fans enjoying the spectacle, while others preferred the traditional individual team launches. "We’d love to have them back, and they are aware of that," Caselli said. "I’m sure they’d be interested in returning; it just needs to be worthwhile for them."
