Mercedes' statement on withdrawing the request to the FIA
On Friday morning, the Mercedes press service published an official statement explaining the reasons for withdrawing their request to the FIA for a review of the stewards' decision regarding the Monaco Grand Prix. "We confirm that we have withdrawn our request to the FIA for a review of the decision concerning the penalties received and served by George Russell during the Monaco Grand Prix," the statement from Mercedes said. "After the decision to overturn the penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly, it was important for us to explore all available options to assess the impact of George's speeding penalty in the pit lane on his final result in the race. We had a limited time to submit a request for a review during the race weekend in Barcelona, so we did so to preserve that right. Subsequent joint discussions with the FIA and Formula 1 showed their willingness to consider the unique circumstances that arose during the Monaco Grand Prix and to take steps to address the causes that led to them. Given this clear willingness, we concluded that further pursuing our request for a review of the stewards' decision would not benefit either our team or motorsport as a whole, so we have withdrawn the request."
