Fornaroli steps up as a contender for Haas while Doohan bides his time.
"We should collaborate with Leonardo to explore options."
Leonardo Fornaroli has surfaced as a possible candidate for Haas in 2027, amidst increasing uncertainty regarding the American team's future lineup. The current Formula 2 champion, who has the support of McLaren, unexpectedly tested Haas cars at Jerez last week as part of the team’s TPC program. The team has stated that it possesses "the capability to test and evaluate drivers through its TPC program," which has been strengthened for 2026 with new support from Toyota. This test occurred just days after McLaren's Andrea Stella confirmed that the team is actively seeking a Formula 1 opportunity for the 21-year-old Italian. "Leonardo is definitely a valuable asset for the future of Formula 1," said Stella in Barcelona. "We certainly want him to drive." Stella indicated that McLaren is willing to place Fornaroli in another team before any future transition to the works team. "We should collaborate with Leonardo to explore options in Formula 1," he mentioned. Haas is predicted to keep Ferrari junior Oliver Bearman for 2027, though Esteban Ocon’s future seems more uncertain. This situation also presents another challenge for reserve driver Jack Doohan, who has been trying to rebuild his career at Haas after losing his Alpine race seat. "If I could get back into a car, that would be incredible," the Australian shared on Fox Sports’ Pit Talk podcast. "However, I'm aware that many factors beyond the norm are influencing the situation." Doohan emphasizes that he is attempting to avoid being overwhelmed by speculation. "I’m concentrating on what I can control," he stated. "There will be opportunities that come into my realm that, to be within my control, are somewhat beyond my control, if that makes sense." He further noted, "I believe there is a solid opportunity, but I’m not in a position where it’s everything or nothing."
