Alesi supports Leclerc even with Hamilton's comeback.
Jean Alesi has dismissed suggestions that Charles Leclerc is facing a similar frustrating career path that he encountered at Ferrari. The esteemed former Ferrari driver was questioned by Italian journalist Leo Turrini regarding whether Leclerc is suffering from what could be termed 'Alesi syndrome' – celebrated by fans but unable to secure a world championship.
"Not at all," the 62-year-old stated to Quotidiano Nazionale. "The comparison doesn't seem valid."
Alesi did acknowledge one point of similarity between them. "I joined Maranello during a time of technical difficulties, to the extent that my close friend Michael (Schumacher), a great champion, didn't win immediately," he explained. "Leclerc has faced a comparable situation."
However, Alesi believes that unlike his own experience, the Monegasque has already proven his worth. "He doesn't need to demonstrate anything," he remarked. "He's a top driver, and he's shown that."
Alesi also highlighted Leclerc's recent long-term contract extension, especially in light of increasing scrutiny following Lewis Hamilton's victory in Barcelona and Ferrari's reported decision to concentrate development efforts around the seven-time world champion. "The choice to extend his contract indicates that Charles has faith in the technical project," Alesi noted. "He has seen something that instills confidence."
When asked if Leclerc's recent downturn is partly due to Hamilton's resurgence, Alesi said that the Briton's return to form shouldn't have been surprising. "Lewis certainly hasn't forgotten how to drive," he said with a smile. "I was pleased with his win in Barcelona. I understand how significant it was."
He then joked about Hamilton's first Ferrari win, adding, "Hamilton has caught up with me. We're even at Ferrari in terms of victories!"
While optimistic about Ferrari's future, Alesi does not believe the Maranello team will be able to surpass Mercedes this year, despite recent improvements. "Ferrari has a solid project and is competitive, but it's not on the same level as Mercedes," he stated. "You won’t catch the Silver Arrows this year.
"You can win a few races, that's certain. But the championship is beyond reach."
Instead, Alesi asserts that championship leader Kimi Antonelli remains the clear frontrunner. "The kid is exceptionally strong," he said. "Russell isn't the most consistent driver. I do like him, but in terms of race pace, Kimi outperforms him. In a race, Kimi is fierce!"
Alesi also expressed his support for Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur. "Fred has experience," he commented. "But he must be allowed to continue his work. Ferrari has undergone too many changes too frequently."
