The automotive industry is facing ongoing challenges as constant political shifts create instability for automakers. The latest company affected is Polestar.

On Thursday, Polestar revealed it will cease operations in the U.S. and concentrate on the European market. This decision comes as a result of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security not granting the automaker permission under the new Connected Vehicle Rule to sell vehicles in the U.S. for the 2027 model year and beyond.

A spokesperson for Polestar informed The Drive that the company will continue to sell its existing inventory as usual. However, moving forward, Polestar will halt the marketing and sale of new cars in the U.S. sector.

“Customers will maintain the same level of access to service and customer support as they currently do,” the spokesperson stated.

The reduction of marketing efforts and staff will happen relatively swiftly, and no 2027 model year vehicles are currently on their way to the U.S., according to the spokesperson.

Currently, Polestar employs around 100 individuals in the U.S. and has 32 dealerships. These dealerships will remain open to support and service existing Polestar vehicles and their owners. The spokesperson mentioned that dealers will sell the current inventory and continue service efforts while also offering used cars.

Currently, Polestar offers two models: the Polestar 3 and the Polestar 4. The Polestar 3 is a sportier, more aerodynamic two-row version of the Volvo EX90, while the Polestar 4 is a taller fastback crossover featuring a hatchback design without a rear window.

In February, Polestar announced plans to reorganize and focus its efforts. Just five months later, it is discontinuing sales operations in the U.S. market.
