The automotive world is still evolving, with ongoing policy changes affecting automakers as the political climate shifts. Today, Polestar finds itself facing challenges.

On Thursday, Polestar revealed it would cease operations in the U.S. and concentrate on the European market. This decision comes in direct response to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security not granting the automaker authorization under the existing Connected Vehicle Rule to sell vehicles in the U.S. starting with the 2027 model year.

A spokesperson for Polestar informed The Drive that the company will continue to sell its existing inventory as it currently does. However, Polestar will halt the marketing and sale of new cars in the U.S. market going forward.

“Customers will receive the same level of service and support as they currently do,” the spokesperson stated.

The reduction in marketing efforts and staffing will occur relatively swiftly, and no 2027 model year vehicles were in transit to the U.S. yet, according to the spokesperson.

Currently, Polestar employs around 100 individuals in the U.S., alongside 32 dealerships. These dealerships will remain operational to support and service existing Polestar vehicles and customers. The spokesperson mentioned that dealers will sell through their current stock and continue to support service operations, as well as sell used cars.

At this time, Polestar offers two models: the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4. The Polestar 3 is a sportier, sleek two-row variant of the Volvo EX90, while the Polestar 4 is a tall fastback crossover with a hatch and no rear window.

In February, Polestar announced plans to reboot and consolidate. Five months later, it is discontinuing its sales activities in the U.S. market.
