When a new Chevy Silverado is introduced, a new GMC Sierra is sure to follow. The General Motors siblings share many components—engines, platforms, etc.—but they’ve become increasingly distinct as the GMC brand targets a more upscale market. The 2027 Sierra Denali Ultimate exemplifies this shift, but before exploring the finer details, let's cover the essentials.

GMC has revamped the exterior of the half-ton Sierra, featuring a bold headlight design reminiscent of the electric model. Instead of relying solely on the LED signature for shape, the headlight starts narrow at the top and widens as it descends. Each trim—Pro, Elevation, AT4 and AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate—also boasts its own unique grille.

The interior is arguably just as important, if not more so, than the exterior in today’s half-ton trucks. GMC recognizes this, which is why they went all out on the 2027 Sierra’s cabin. A large 16.3-inch center screen takes center stage, and in the higher trims, it even swivels like a television mount. This is complemented by a 12.2-inch digital gauge cluster on the left and an optional 11.5-inch passenger screen on the right. Including the 15-inch heads-up display and an 8.5-inch rearview mirror with a camera feed, there are over 60 inches of screens here. However, having “more screens” doesn’t necessarily equate to “more luxury.”

GMC has enhanced the Denali Ultimate further with forged wood accents, unique color combinations, and stitching details, featuring a topographic pattern on the seats and door panels. This model also offers a 16-speaker Bose sound system, shared with the AT4X, including speakers integrated into the driver and front passenger headrests—something I've previously seen only in the Yukon Denali Ultimate and Infiniti QX80, though there may be other luxury vehicles that include it. (Update: Some Ford F-150s equipped with the B&O Unleashed Sound System also have this feature!)

Another significant interior upgrade is the MultiPro center console, which can fold and flip to provide either deep storage or a flat workspace, and it includes two available MagSafe wireless chargers. Plus, since the shifter is mounted on the column, GMC avoided designing a complex folding lever like Ford did for the F-150.

The powertrain lineup for the 2027 Sierra 1500 mirrors that of its Silverado counterpart, featuring new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter small-block V8 options. The 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder continues to be the standard engine on lower trims, while the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six remains available. Power figures for the new gas V8s aren’t officially released yet, but GMC aligns with Chevy’s assertion that the 6.6-liter represents the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the full-size pickup segment.

Only a 10-speed transmission is being offered now as GM phases out the eight-speed on TurboMax models.

GMC has also made enhancements to its off-road variants, the AT4 and AT4X, for 2027. This year, they feature larger tire sizes—34-inch Goodyears on the standard model and 35-inch on the top-tier version—along with Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers to supplement the DSSV units that set the AT4X and Silverado ZR2 apart. It would be challenging to find a more impressive off-road vehicle than this.

Pricing for the new Sierra has yet to be announced, but we anticipate those details, along with specifications for the small-block engines, will be revealed by the end of the year. GMC aims to launch the 2027 model sometime during that period, though they haven't provided specifics beyond that.
