Sainz's father states that Williams has a lengthy path to recovery ahead.
"The philosophy of life should be to never give up."
Carlos Sainz’s father has stated that Williams is unlikely to see significant improvement this season, amidst ongoing speculation regarding his son’s potential next steps. Reports suggest that Sainz may have opportunities elsewhere in 2027, although the Spanish driver has consistently claimed that his primary focus remains on aiding Williams in their recovery. During the inauguration of Plenergy’s 400th service station, where he appeared as a brand ambassador, two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr defended his son's efforts.
"The philosophy of life should be to never give up," he was quoted by Spanish media. "In tough moments, having a clear plan and staying determined is essential. That’s what Carlos is doing." He expressed that he believes Sainz is having a remarkable year given the circumstances, stating, "With what he has, he couldn’t do more. Most importantly, he’s demonstrating that he hasn’t given up, even though he’s battling in the back."
Sainz Sr dampened hopes for a significant turnaround at Williams before the season concludes, saying, "The gap is too large." He acknowledged that improvement is evident but cautioned, "The pace of improvement must be spectacular for them to contend for a Q2 spot, but not much beyond that." He also commented on the disappointing performance discrepancies in Formula 1, stating, "We’ve shifted from the most competitive F1 in history to seeing four-second differences. Let’s hope that gradually Williams and the whole grid can close the gap to enhance the spectacle and ensure the leader doesn’t lap the seventh-place car."
Looking ahead, Sainz Sr mentioned that the upcoming Formula 1 event in Madrid will provide his son with a home race that is relatively close. "Although I would have preferred it to be under different circumstances, he will surely enjoy competing 20 minutes from home. That will offer him unique motivation, and there are still nine years of the Grand Prix to come."
Sainz himself acknowledged that Williams has regressed compared to the previous season. When asked if podiums and victories were possible in the team's future, he remarked, "Last year I would have said yes, but this year I think we’ve taken a step back that leaves us further behind. That’s a fact." He continued, "However, if you execute everything correctly, as Red Bull, Mercedes, and McLaren have demonstrated in the past, you can compete for wins in a few years. The key is having the right people and environment to achieve that."
Sainz also dismissed claims that he is characterized more by hard work than innate talent. "I find it frustrating when things are overly simplified," he noted. "Yet, I don't mind being regarded as a very hard worker. In fact, it flatters me, and I’d rather be seen as a good professional than as someone who takes it easy."
