McLaren named the reasons for the lag.
Last year, the McLaren team won eleven races before the summer break, but this year they haven't won any yet. Team principal Andrea Stella outlined the reasons for falling behind their competitors...
Andrea Stella: "We are not able to update the car as quickly as our competitors. I think this is a key factor. We see that everyone who introduces updates improves their lap times by about three tenths. This wouldn't allow us to reach the level of Ferrari and Mercedes, to whom we are losing by about half a second, but it would be very helpful.
The second factor, in my opinion, is that Silverstone has low grip on the track; the car slides and behaves unpredictably due to the wind, so cars with better grip and more downforce gain an advantage.
It may also be that we cannot fully unlock the potential of the power unit. It's not just about optimal energy use over the distance, but also a number of other factors, including technical specifications. I can't name tires as a factor – in the last race, tire wear over the distance was roughly the same for everyone.
Certainly, we do not have the advantages we had in 2025, which is why we find ourselves behind."
