Sergio Perez joined Red Bull Racing in 2021 and spent four seasons as Max Verstappen's teammate. The Mexican driver was clearly the team's second driver and did not often show the same speed as Max. In the High Performance podcast, Sergio talked about how difficult it is to compete in the same team as Max.
Sergio Perez: "Being Max's teammate at Red Bull is the toughest challenge. However, going up against Max would be very difficult in any team.
But at Red Bull, it's even harder because it's his team, his people, and his familiar environment. To be on equal footing with him, everything around you needs to operate at the highest level, and you simply don't have that.
Max received the maximum opportunities in terms of engineering support – leading engineers, the most experienced specialists – everyone worked for him. But I knew about this even before moving to Red Bull, so I decided for myself: either I complain, or I work with what I have. I chose the second option.
Throughout all four years in the team, I had the same engineering staff. And I am really very proud of that."
