Hulkenberg dismisses the speculation about Sainz transferring to Audi with a laugh.
Carlos Sainz has reaffirmed that Williams continues to be his favored long-term project, despite fresh speculation regarding a connection with Audi. Although Audi's head, Mattia Binotto, has recently downplayed reports of renewed efforts to recruit the Spaniard, rumors persist that the German automaker might still pursue Sainz amid Williams’ challenging performance issues.
Sainz's dissatisfaction with Williams peaked at Silverstone, but he emphasized that his commitment remains unchanged after the race at Spa. "I’m not contemplating whether I’ll have more or fewer chances," he shared with the Spanish press. "I’m at a point where I am certain about my long-term preference – that this project succeeds. As I have stated multiple times, the effort I’m putting into this project is immense, and that will continue. I'm fully dedicated to it."
However, Sainz acknowledged that recent upgrades have not improved Williams' situation. "What disappointed me was seeing how far we were from our goals," he remarked. He also noted that his own achievements are often overlooked due to the car’s limitations. "The fans and media don’t notice if I’m a tenth faster or slower," Sainz stated. "But I perform well in what I can control, and the team principals recognize that. The press or fans, not as much."
Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg also sought to dismiss the escalating rumors that Audi might replace him with Sainz in 2027. "That's just typical summer talk in Formula 1," the German noted. "I’m aware the team is quite pleased with Gabriel and me. We’ve just begun; it’s the inaugural year for the factory team. The contractual situation is very clear." Hulkenberg even playfully commented on Sainz’s future, saying, "The reserve driver position is still available," he laughed. "But I doubt he’s interested. As far as I know, there are no uncertainties."
