Gasly: We give too much to the leaders of the midfield group.
The Alpine drivers assessed the results of the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix differently. While Pierre Gasly was dissatisfied with his twelfth place, Franco Colapinto acknowledged that his thirteenth result reflects his level, considering the damaged car in the second practice session.
Pierre Gasly (12th): "If we take into account how this weekend started for us and what the pace was compared to our competitors, we can say that the result turned out to be even better than expected. We were only two-tenths of a second off the top ten and managed to outpace one of the Audi cars. At the same time, I set my best time using only one set of Soft tires, so to some extent, we can be satisfied with the progress compared to yesterday.
On the other hand, the car is still difficult to handle. It doesn't provide the right sensations, we lack speed, and right now we are giving away too much to the leaders of the midfield, with whom we should be competing.
The gap is especially noticeable on a single fast lap. I can't drive the way I would like to because the balance is far from optimal, the car is constantly sliding, which causes us to lose time and wear out the tires more.
Tomorrow, an increase in wind is expected, which could add some intrigue. Additionally, we have saved one new set of Hard tires for the race. Considering the speed of our competitors, we need to start well and try something unconventional if we want to compete with them in the race. Overtaking on this track is not easy, but we will do everything possible and see what the final result will be."
Franco Colapinto (13th): "On Saturday, I continued to make up for the lost time from the day before. To be honest, thirteenth place reflects our current level.
On Friday in the second practice, it was tough because the wind picked up, the car was unstable, and I only managed to complete three or four fast laps before making a mistake in the last corner. So today felt more like a sprint weekend format – we needed to quickly make up for lost time. I think the team did well and managed to improve the car.
In many ways, we were operating almost blindly, but we worked well. In my last attempt, I lost some grip at the start of the lap, but I was able to make up for it in the second and third sectors. It's a bit disappointing, but I think with the current car, this is the result we could expect.
We are waiting for updates that should come soon, and we hope they will allow us to make a noticeable step forward. For now, we are a bit lacking in speed this weekend.
I hope tomorrow we can challenge our competitors and fight for points, as we did in Spa. Overtaking on this track is not easy, but usually, our race pace is better than in qualifying. We will try to do everything possible to go into the summer break with a good result for the team."
