F2: Kush Maini won the qualification in Hungary
Kush Maini set the best time in the Formula 2 qualifying in Hungary. For the ART Grand Prix driver, this is already his second pole of the season. Alongside him, Rafael Kamara will start from the front row.
As soon as the countdown for the 30-minute qualifying began, the drivers rushed onto the track, but not all of them. After two installation laps, the fast attempts began. The benchmark was set by Lawrence van Hoopen – 1:30.846, however, the Trident driver led for only a few seconds.
The best time after the first attempt belonged to the championship leader Nicola Colov – 1:29.601. Gabriele Mini was a tenth behind him, while Martinius Stenshorn was in third place, just 0.003 seconds behind Mini. Rafael Kamara went off track during his fast lap and returned to the pits without setting a time.
Among those who did not immediately go out for their first attempt were Noel Leon and Kush Maini. They managed to surpass Colov's result and took the first and second spots, but a few minutes later Rafael Kamara returned to the track and this time completed a lap with the best time of the session – 1:29.380.
Cooling his tires on one lap, Kamara made another attempt and improved his result, setting a new benchmark for his rivals – 1:29.323.
The others returned to the track with ten minutes left in qualifying. Nicola Colov improved Kamara's time, but Joshua Durksen and Kush Maini went even faster – 1:28.896. Tasanapol Intrafuwasak set the third fastest time, pushing Colov down to fourth.
However, the qualifying session was not over yet. The drivers, apart from the top three and Colov, still had time for one more fast lap and a fresh set of tires. Van Hoopen improved and climbed to fourth place. Dino Beganovic also improved his time, setting the sixth fastest time.
Noel Leon drove even better – second, but Rafael Kamara went even faster; however, the Brazilian was just over a tenth short of overtaking Maini in the battle for pole. The championship leader Colov qualified seventh.
The starting grid for the sprint is reversed – the drivers who took the top ten positions will start tomorrow in reverse order. Thus, Sebastian Montoya will start from pole on Saturday. Alongside him from the front row will be Gabriele Mini.
