Kimi Antonelli: It's better not to miss the first training session.
Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth in Hungary and complained that missing the first free practice session on Friday affected his preparation for qualifying and the race. His Mercedes teammate George Russell stopped on the track at the end of qualifying due to a coolant system leak.
Kimi Antonelli (4th): "Speaking about my lap, the gust of tailwind in the ninth corner cost me about a tenth of a second. I could have gained another one and a half tenths in the last corner, but I couldn't fully realize the car's potential due to insufficient grip on the track.
Moreover, when I was entering the last corner, yellow flags appeared. I did everything I could, slowed down, and lost time compared to my previous laps. Of course, it's very disappointing, and I think third place was quite realistic. But I probably wouldn't have had enough for pole position. Most likely, I would have lost to Lando by about five hundredths of a second.
This year I realized that on tracks of this type and with this car, it's better not to miss the first practice. That's when you start to get into the rhythm, so missing the first Friday session puts you at a disadvantage, especially in such challenging conditions as this weekend. At least now all mandatory practices for young drivers are behind me, and I won't have to think about it for the rest of the season.
Of course, if I had participated in the first practice, I might have been able to better unlock the car's potential and find slightly different settings. But we did everything we could, and I believe the team did a good job.
I am looking forward to the race, as our race pace looks promising."
George Russell (7th): "My car's coolant system pressure dropped due to a leak. When I stopped on the track, all the coolant leaked out, so we don't know yet where the problem occurred. I hope this won't affect tomorrow's race.
Some signs of a lack of speed were noticeable yesterday because we looked even less competitive then than we do now. But at the same time, I had one of the best paces during a long series of laps, which indicates that the problem is likely not with the car but with the tire performance.
Tomorrow we'll find out if we managed to find the right compromise between settings for qualifying and the race. We could have made the car faster on one quick lap, but then we would have had to sacrifice race pace.
Let's see if our choice was correct. Overtaking on this track is very difficult, so I would like to start from a higher position."
