Malaysia and Imola set for a return to F1.
Malaysia seems to be on the verge of announcing an unexpected return to Formula 1, potentially hosting the delayed Bahrain GP at Sepang in October. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim mentioned that an announcement is forthcoming as Formula 1 seeks to fill the gap on October 4 between the Azerbaijan and Singapore races. "Regarding F1, we will announce on Sunday," Anwar informed Malaysian media.
According to The Straits Times, there are ongoing discussions and evaluations related to Malaysia’s first grand prix since 2017. This unconventional plan may result in the event maintaining the Bahrain GP title, even though it takes place at Sepang, as the original Sakhir race was postponed due to the conflict involving Iran. Sky Italia indicates that Saudi Arabia’s participation is now essentially excluded, while the Bahrain GP could be shifted to Malaysia since Sepang aligns well with the freight route from Baku to Singapore.
The future of the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi later this season is also still unclear, particularly with the escalating Middle Eastern conflict. Meanwhile, Imola has been identified as another potential backup venue, possibly for the season finale in early December. Imola's mayor Marco Panieri and circuit director Pietro Benvenuti are currently in the Hungaroring paddock for discussions. Corriere della Sera states that Imola is prepared to step in, although low temperatures, rain, and fog could pose significant challenges for a December race. The start time might be adjusted to midday to mitigate light-related issues.
Formula 1 is anticipated to first confirm the October option before postponing decisions regarding Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and any potential replacement for the finale until the geopolitical landscape becomes more defined.
