Reigning world champion and Hungarian GP polesitter Lando Norris has criticized Formula 1 for placing profit above the integrity of the sport under Liberty Media's management. His remarks extend beyond the common grievances regarding the 2026 cars and raise questions regarding the fundamental direction of contemporary Formula 1.
"Currently, our only focus is on maximizing profits, and that’s not the way a sport should operate," Norris stated in Hungary. "That’s not the way it ought to be managed."
The McLaren driver acknowledges that Formula 1 functions as a business, yet believes that commercial growth has taken precedence to an excessive degree. "Formula 1 is indeed a business, and every business aims to be profitable. However, it's no longer about enhancing the sport to its fullest potential."
"It is primarily about increasing revenue. That is not how a sport should be conducted, and I find that unfortunate," Norris added, with his comments also featured in the Dutch publication Formule 1.
Norris asserts that the introduction of manufacturers like Audi and Cadillac is prioritized over addressing drivers' concerns. "They hear us out, but we can't change the engine in the middle of a season or even with one or two years’ notice, because it’s not about optimizing the car’s performance. It’s focused on business."
"We have very limited input, and many choices are made because having Audi and other teams involved is seen as a greater triumph than merely accommodating the drivers." The Brit insists that drivers should wield more influence in shaping the future of Formula 1.
"The drivers should always have the most significant say," the 26-year-old remarked. "This isn’t because we are selfish, but because we are the ones who understand how racing should be. We are in the best position to determine what motorsport should be, what it is capable of, and what isn’t feasible."
"We genuinely want the best for everyone, and at present, that's not happening." Norris also noted that the way fans engage with Formula 1 has drastically changed since the launch of Netflix’s Drive to Survive.
"If you look at fans from five years ago, prior to Drive to Survive, they would probably view some of these changes negatively."
"Today, fans seem to appreciate the personalities and individual performances of drivers more than the race itself. That's simply how the sport has evolved."
