Domenicali is skeptical about Verstappen leaving F1.

      Stefano Domenicali expresses skepticism about Max Verstappen leaving Formula 1, while asserting that the sport would continue to flourish in his absence. His remarks follow recent photographs of Verstappen and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who have been seen vacationing together in Sardinia, where they often enjoy their yachts during the summer break. Last year's similar sighting was deemed coincidental, and neither party has commented on the recent images.

      Amid ongoing speculation regarding Verstappen’s future, Domenicali believes that upcoming regulatory changes will incentivize the Dutch driver to remain in the sport. "The drivers who have tried next year's changes in the simulator feel we are moving in the right direction," he noted.

      Formula 1 is set to modify the power distribution from 53-47 this season to 58-42 in 2027, thereby lessening the extreme energy-management effect that Verstappen has consistently criticized. "We also discussed this with Max," Domenicali remarked. "It's important to remember that there is a specific structure."

      "To implement rule changes, teams and engine suppliers must first reach an agreement with the FIA and us." While Mercedes and Red Bull supported more aggressive modifications, other manufacturers did not endorse the FIA’s initial proposal. "We wanted even bolder changes, but the teams had to agree to that," confirmed Domenicali.

      Additional adjustments are anticipated for 2028, with Formula 1 aiming to return to V8 engines in 2031. "I believe Max will be very pleased," he stated. "Max is an outstanding driver. I think he enjoys Formula 1 and is excited about its future."

      "We’ll engage in discussions about future regulations together. I have a strong rapport with him. I believe Formula 1 is substantial enough for him to be a part of it, but ultimately, the decision about his future lies with him."

      Domenicali was straightforward when asked what would occur if Verstappen decided to leave. "If he doesn’t renew, the sport will continue," the Italian said. The Formula 1 CEO also brushed aside much of the technical criticism regarding the 2026 regulations, contending that most fans merely want to see exciting action on the track.

      "There’s a lot happening on the track, and fans take pleasure in that," he explained. "They aren't caught up in complex technical debates."

      "Many fans don't care about battery status; some do, while others simply want to see events unfold on the track, like Max overtaking Lewis in Hungary."

      "It’s a spectacle, and the reasons behind it are irrelevant."

      However, Domenicali stated that Formula 1 would unveil its next set of regulations by the end of the year. "The focus must be on simplifying everything, making the cars lighter, utilizing sustainable fuels and electrification. By year’s end, we’ll have a package ready for presentation and discussion regarding the next regulations."
