Audi's upcoming Q9 will display your turn signals directly onto the road.

      The turn signal projection feature of the 2027 Audi Q9 in action has been showcased.

      After a tumultuous beginning, car manufacturers operating in the U.S. are gradually starting to develop adaptive headlights that comply with the new regulations from the NHTSA, which significantly differ from European standards where this technology is more commonly used. Audi is a prime example, introducing its Q9 flagship SUV with the company’s Digital Matrix LED technology, which enables headlights to redirect beams away from oncoming vehicles to prevent blinding other drivers. Additionally, Audi is enhancing the Q9's lighting with a new system that projects turn indicators onto the road, featuring dynamic arrows that help inform everyone—especially those who may not be able to see the headlights or taillights of the vehicle—about the driver's intended direction.

      Many high-end vehicles today come equipped with projectors that display a graphic on the ground, usually when the doors are unlocked. However, Audi is taking it further by adding a practical benefit to this feature.

      Consider being in a line of cars waiting at a stoplight. If you're at the back of the line behind a semi truck, you may not see that the driver of the Audi Q9 at the front has signaled to turn left. The projections would provide you with an indication of the Q9's intentions. While it may not radically enhance safety, any improvement in visibility regarding the actions of other drivers is a positive development.

      The animated arrows appear in a repetitive pattern, projecting from each corner of the vehicle in a diagonal manner, making them more legible from shallow angles. In theory, this feature not only assists drivers but also benefits pedestrians and cyclists, who are likely to notice the ground graphics instead of overhead lights.

      This feature is not exclusive to the Q9; the smaller Q7 will also receive the same matrix technology, and it may eventually be implemented across other Audi models. The introduction of adaptive headlights is timely in the U.S., where automakers continue to increase headlight brightness, yet face regulatory challenges in managing that brightness to ensure safety and comfort for all road users.

      While Audi's new indicator feature is not a game-changer, it is an interesting advancement. One wonders what additional capabilities these projectors might offer in the future.
