Flock's CEO Acknowledges that Police Misconduct 'Is an Issue.' He Then Stands by His Company.

      Flock has emerged as a contentious topic across the United States. I myself experienced the extensive tracking system, which monitored me for several days, ultimately leading to four police officers confronting my wife and me. I was one of millions affected by numerous errors each month. However, beyond these errors lies the improper use of the technology and platform itself.

      In an exclusive interview on The Drivecast, Flock Safety Founder and CEO Garrett Langley stated, “The abuse is a problem.” He acknowledged awareness of the issue and emphasized, “We need to work towards reducing it to zero. Any level of abuse is unacceptable.”

      Langley admitted that in the past, Flock did not require the municipalities that subscribe to its services to implement multi-factor authentication (MFA). The absence of MFA made it significantly easier for unauthorized individuals to access Flock’s systems, complicating the ability for Flock or others to conduct audits and trace who accessed what. Flock now mandates the use of MFA.

      However, the enforcement of MFA alone has not sufficiently addressed misuse issues. Langley acknowledged, “Regarding your point on auditability and accountability, I actually believe this is a broader challenge within law enforcement—that we are among the few systems that incorporate auditing and abnormal behavior detection.”

      Langley took responsibility, stating, “All the incidents you see occurring are due to our system flagging, ‘That’s quite unusual.’ It may not necessarily be illegal—innocent until proven guilty—but a criminal investigation should have been initiated.”

      Furthermore, Langley addressed the lack of regulations governing the technology sold by his company, saying, “I wish there were more state regulations requiring every system used by law enforcement to have this standard of sophisticated auditing and abnormal detection.” He expanded on this by stating, “We need to do more in that regard.”

      Regarding the current abuse of Flock’s platform, Langley reiterated, “The abuse is a problem. We need to continue to get that down to zero. Any level of abuse is unacceptable.” However, he quickly defended Flock’s services by adding, “To be very clear, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that over a million cases were resolved last year using this technology, and the level of abuse is remarkably low compared to that.”

      While MFA has been mandated and audit logs have revealed instances of police misuse in various states, such as Texas and Georgia—where Langley resides—he did not elaborate on what safeguards are being implemented within the system to prevent future abuses by authorities.
