Barcelona awaits updates as the 2027 F1 schedule is postponed.

      Formula 1’s uncertainty in the Middle East is now affecting plans for 2027, with Barcelona emerging as the probable alternate for the traditional pre-season test in Bahrain. The ongoing conflict with Iran has already necessitated the relocation of Bahrain’s 2026 race to Malaysia, while Jeddah currently lacks a rescheduled date, and Qatar and Abu Dhabi face potential threats later this season. Consequently, Formula 1 is postponing the release of the 2027 calendar until autumn as it prepares alternative arrangements for both testing and races. Bahrain is anticipated to host the pre-season testing and the opening round next year, but teams require early clarity to organize car launches, logistics, and other preparations. Josep Lluis Santamaria, general manager of the Barcelona circuit, and his team have reportedly prioritized securing the test, holding multiple discussions with F1 officials. Stefano Domenicali confirmed that Formula 1 will first present a standard 2027 race calendar, but it may undergo modifications during the winter. "The calendar presented in autumn will serve as a kind of normal plan," stated the Formula 1 CEO. He added, "If the situation in the Middle East remains unresolved, we obviously have alternatives, which means other plans." However, he noted that the trigger for these adjustments will occur at the end of the year, allowing ample time to make changes. Domenicali emphasized that Formula 1 is committed to holding 24 races regardless of which areas are available. "Rest assured, we have various plans with different options already established to ensure that our target of 24 races remains for next year," he affirmed. Portugal and Turkey are anticipated to return in 2027, potentially offering Formula 1 increased flexibility if the Middle East schedule continues to be unstable. The F1 CEO acknowledged that the broader political context is far more critical than the scheduling issues faced by Formula 1. "If the situation in that region is not resolved by next year, F1 becomes a minor concern, as the circumstances will be very dire," said Domenicali. Additionally, no new races are expected before 2028, although discussions are ongoing with Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, and Argentina. "Negotiations are advancing well in Africa," said Domenicali. "We are also engaging in talks in South America and the Far East."
