      "Support is crucial at certain times"

      Max Verstappen has called on the Dutch government to enhance efforts in safeguarding the future of motorsport, as Formula 1 is set to depart from Zandvoort following this month’s final Dutch Grand Prix. The race made its comeback in 2021 amid Verstappen’s immense popularity, with Bernie Ecclestone recently stating that it wouldn’t have happened without the four-time world champion. However, Verstappen insists that maintaining Dutch motorsport after Formula 1's withdrawal will require more than just his fame.

      "That's not something I can control," he told the Dutch magazine Formule 1 when asked about ways to keep motorsport thriving in the Netherlands. "The popularity largely hinges on the emerging talent, and hopefully someone will reach Formula 1. That's what generates the biggest excitement."

      "Luck always plays a part. Look at Germany's past. I hope the government will also take on this challenge." Verstappen asserts that government backing can significantly impact the situation. "Support is crucial at certain times. At least everyone has witnessed the potential of motorsport," stated the 28-year-old.

      He referred to Germany as a cautionary tale, highlighting its robust automotive heritage and Schumacher-inspired buzz, yet lacking a current Formula 1 race. "Everything needs to be environmentally friendly, yet that’s also the territory of major manufacturers," Verstappen remarked, mentioning Germany. "There’s a contradiction there. Fortunately, they still host fantastic races, like the Nurburgring 24 Hours, but organizing such events is also challenging."

      Verstappen noted that Spain serves as a better example of how public backing can foster young talent. "In Spain, for instance, we see how it can be done, the extent of support for motorcycle racers and circuits," he said. "When a country is determined, it can create opportunities for talents to grow and develop."
