The historic Jordan 191 car will be auctioned at Goodwood.
The autumn motorsport festival Goodwood Revival is known not only for being a truly vibrant and interesting event that gathers many drivers from different generations competing behind the wheel of historical cars of various classes and categories. For example, one of its regular participants is Jenson Button, the 2009 world champion.
On September 19, Bonhams auction house will hold traditional auctions at Goodwood, and one of the most intriguing lots is the Jordan-Ford 191 car. It became famous in the year of its debut in Formula 1, not only due to its quite attractive exterior and decent characteristics but primarily because it was the car in which Michael Schumacher made his debut in the World Championship.
This happened almost exactly 35 years ago, on August 25, 1991, but the chassis on which the future seven-time world champion showed the 7th fastest time in qualifying just a day before, ahead of many recognized masters of that time, was sold a few years ago for an impressive 1,495,000 euros, and it had the factory number 191/6.
In total, Eddie Jordan's team built seven such cars, designed under the guidance of Gary Anderson, its technical director, and the chassis that will be auctioned at Bonhams has the number 191/3. The starting price is 325,000 pounds, with expectations that it will be sold for 525,000.
In that season, such cars were also driven by Andrea de Cesaris, Roberto Moreno, Alessandro Zanardi, and Bertrand Gachot, who was replaced by 22-year-old Michael at the Belgian stage of the championship. Longtime fans of Formula 1 and Schumacher's talent are well aware of the circumstances under which this happened, and if anyone is not familiar with that story, we have referred to it more than once.
The car, which will surely find a new owner in just over a month and take its rightful place in their collection, was driven by de Cesaris in 1991, including during the British Grand Prix where he crashed due to a suspension failure.
