      Former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola warns the FIA against hasty decisions in developing new regulations for engines and the decision to return to V8s – the experienced Italian believes it is much better to refine the existing power units.

      Luigi Mazzola: “A complete change in the concept of the power unit nullifies a huge amount of work already done by manufacturers. At that time, this decision did not take into account all possible variables. The authors of the regulations became enamored with the project's environmental friendliness, without seeing the bigger picture, but now that the problems have become evident, we need to work on resolving them, not invent new rules.

      If you increase the power of the electric part to 350 kW, while practically not changing the fuel tank volume, problems are inevitable. I still don’t understand why they simply didn’t increase the tank volume – the changes would be minimal, but many issues could have been avoided.

      If you have chosen a direction, stick to it. Optimize, achieve better performance and greater efficiency. There is no need to rewrite the rules from scratch. Returning to V8s will be the next mistake. We should not start everything from scratch, but rather improve the existing technical architecture through energy management. This approach would allow us to preserve a large part of the technical developments already made and eliminate the shortcomings that have become evident within the framework of the current regulations.”
