Newey: Glasses are a valuable reward for our employees.
At the Dutch Grand Prix, Aston Martin updated the chassis and power unit – and hoped for progress. In the end, Fernando Alonso achieved his best result of the season…
Adrian Newey, team principal: “When the race was stopped with red flags, we fitted Fernando with a new set of Soft tires before the restart. Thanks to his skilled driving, he was able to run almost half the race on them. In the end, we managed with one pit stop – that was our only chance to earn points.
Only in the final laps did Fernando come under pressure from Gasly, but we had enough pace to hold onto 9th place and earn two important points.
Lance had handling issues – we suspect they may have been caused by damage to the car, and we had to retire it from the race.
The points earned today are a valuable reward for the efforts of all our staff. I want to thank the entire team in Silverstone, who have worked hard to improve our results in recent months.”
Fernando Alonso (9th): “It’s great to earn points in Zandvoort. I didn’t expect such a result; it’s really the team’s achievement, which made the most of everything we had.
We still have some handling issues, but this weekend we made another step forward. We continue to work to get more out of the car.”
Lance Stroll (retirement): “At the start of the race, my car sustained damage that affected its performance. Speed was lost, the car was sliding a lot, so we made an early pit stop to switch to Hard tires, but unfortunately, that didn’t help. We still have a lot of work to do to improve the car’s handling.”
