Qatar asserts that the F1 race will still proceed as planned.
Qatar is making efforts to alleviate increasing concerns about the ability of Formula 1 to safely complete its schedule in the Middle East, affirming that preparations for the race in Lusail this November are ongoing as intended. This announcement follows the postponement and subsequent cancellation of the 2026 Qatar 1812km World Endurance Championship race.
Abdul Rahman bin Abdullatif Al Mannai, the president of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, stated that the country has been prepared to host significant events for some time now. "We need to distinguish geopolitics from Qatar’s sporting capabilities," he remarked.
"Qatar has shown that it can safely host major international sporting events to high standards. The country has been secure for months now." He added, "Our airport is fully operational, including transit flights between Asia and Europe."
However, when specifically asked if the current situation could impact the Formula 1 race in November, Al Mannai refrained from offering a definite assurance. "The plan is to have the race," he responded. "We are active and preparing for MotoGP as well, and we are engaged in discussions with Formula 1. Nonetheless, there are certain factors beyond our control."
"We cannot predict what will happen. We must continue with our plans and be prepared." He concluded with, "As of now, everything is favorable. All systems are a go."
These remarks are notable amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the late-season races in the Middle East, with Formula 1 closely observing developments related to Iran, while Imola is reportedly prepared as an alternative venue. Qatar is also planning beyond 2026, as the WEC is set to return to Lusail for the opening round of the 2027 season.
"We are very excited to return as the opening round for 2027, and we eagerly await it," Al Mannai expressed. "Qatar is not retreating from endurance racing due to one challenging season. Our commitment is long-term."
