Marko is uncertain about Verstappen's chances of winning at Monza.
Dr. Helmut Marko has dampened expectations for Max Verstappen's chances of winning at Monza, also criticizing the new engine regulations that have placed Red Bull-Ford at the forefront of the FIA’s power unit rankings. In an interview with the Austrian newspaper Osterreich, the former Red Bull advisor indicated that the Italian Grand Prix may come too soon for the team to realistically aim for a win. "On the short Zandvoort circuit, we were four or five tenths behind," remarked the 83-year-old. "That’s a long time to be off pace." He asserted, "Winning will be challenging."
Marko pointed to upcoming races as more favorable prospects. "Our best chance might be in Texas, Las Vegas, or Mexico," he stated. He also criticized the FIA’s current development handicap system, known as ADUO, after Red Bull-Ford was identified as the benchmark power unit on two occasions. "These regulations are outdated and need immediate revision," Marko expressed. "The powertrain comprises an internal combustion engine, electric motor, software, and battery. Red Bull certainly doesn’t possess the best powertrain."
Marko mentioned that the chassis development route has also negatively impacted the team. "They started decently, but then progress went awry," he explained. "If you go in the wrong direction with development twice, it becomes financially challenging due to cost-cap regulations."
When questioned about the impact of Adrian Newey’s departure on Red Bull, Marko defended the remaining technical team. "The team demonstrated last year, when they just missed out on the World Championship without Newey, that they are capable," he stated. "But as you know, I’m merely an observer from a distance now."
He also acknowledged that Verstappen’s severe crash at Zandvoort was alarming. "I was quite taken aback when the car spun," he confessed. "Fortunately, there was some space between it and the cars behind, and luckily Lawson reacted very well." He added, "If someone collides with a car that’s sideways like that, it could be extremely dangerous."
