      Dual-clutch transmissions have consistently been marketed to automotive enthusiasts as extremely quick. For those seeking engagement, a manual transmission is the way to go; for speed, a DCT is preferred. Manufacturers like Porsche and Nissan were the first to introduce this technology in the 911 and GT-R, respectively, followed later by more mainstream performance vehicles such as Hyundai's N models. Now, we’ve reached a stage where even a utility side-by-side like the 2026 Honda Pioneer I'm currently testing is equipped with a DCT.

      You might be asking: “Why?” That’s the topic I’m here to discuss.

      To clarify, very few UTVs are equipped with DCTs: the Can-Am Maverick R, the Honda Pioneer, and the Honda Talon are the only notable examples. I haven’t tested the Talon yet. These machines—the aggressive Maverick R, with its unique front suspension, and the hardworking Pioneer—share little else in common. Nevertheless, the shifting experience is quite similar.

      I previously wrote extensively about the Maverick R, but it’s essential to highlight the transmission. It makes perfect sense in a vehicle like this, which has a turbocharged engine producing 240 horsepower. The DCT gives it a rally car-like feel, unlike the Polaris RZR Pro R that utilizes a more traditional continuously variable transmission.

      A shiftable transmission is advantageous when you need to rev quickly. Although modern CVTs in high-performance side-by-sides have improved significantly, the ability to shift to third gear with a paddle pull is irreplaceable. Imagine zooming downhill and facing a series of tight turns with trees flanking both sides. When you can deliberately downshift, engine braking is helpful for slowing down while keeping the revs high for responsive throttle.

      On the contrary, the Pioneer’s dual-clutch is distinct. While the vehicle isn’t particularly sporty in most respects, the six-speed transmission certainly exhibits the characteristic thunks and clunks of a DCT. This is because there’s always one clutch ready to engage as the other disengages—one clutch manages the odd gears, while the other manages the even gears.

      The new Pioneer offers four driving modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Tow/Haul. Each mode adjusts the power delivery and shift points. While you might not notice these differences as much in a side-by-side with a standard CVT, they are indeed apparent in the Pioneer. Instead of a loud whine from the engine at full throttle, the Honda’s parallel-twin engine rises through the revs with each shift, giving it a more truck-like quality.

      Speaking of trucks, the Pioneer operates more like one than your average side-by-side. It doesn’t feel strained under load, and in my experience, it’s easier to handle at low speeds. This is partly because you can use the transmission and engine to aid in slowing down. This approach is similar to what I described with the Maverick R; however, it applies here while towing a utility trailer or transporting a load of firewood.

      Then there’s the tactile feel. It's challenging to convey the experience of the Pioneer’s transmission without resorting to some evocative sounds. Accelerating after a steep incline produces a casual sa-konk, while a vigorous push on the throttle results in a more dramatic reaction from the DCT. Firm acceleration smooths out the shifts, but they remain distinct. It’s genuinely a peculiar experience if you’re accustomed to CVTs.

      My reservations regarding DCTs in UTVs are understandable: What if they fail? While I won’t claim that CVTs are infallible, they are much more prevalent, and many dedicated riders possess the skills to repair them on the trail. I’m uncertain what the DCT equivalent of a slipped belt would be, but I doubt it could be easily resolved on the side of a steep hill. Just to clarify, Honda DCTs do not have a terrible reputation for reliability based on what I’ve observed. It resembles the technological complexities found in modern diesel trucks: they perform splendidly when functioning, but can lead to significant hassle when they fail.
