How Aston Martin intends to address development standstill

Aston Martin’s new team principal might have addressed the challenges that hindered in-season car development over the past few years. This is the perspective of Jefferson Slack, the increasingly prominent commercial director at the Lawrence Stroll-owned team, which has faced difficulties in advancing since early 2023 despite significant investments.

Since the conclusion of last season, Aston Martin appointed former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell as the new team principal, succeeding Mike Krack, who will now transition to the role of chief trackside officer. Slack, who started his career managing Michael Jordan's marketing efforts before venturing into European football, describes this as part of a new strategy for the team.

"I’m not someone deeply involved in Formula 1, nor am I a technical expert," Slack shared with DAZN. "I only met Andy a few months ago, but I'm incredibly impressed. He possesses the technical expertise, understands the human aspect, demonstrates leadership, is decisive, yet fair, which I believe is crucial for our future."

Slack highlighted that it was Cowell's decision to have Enrico Cardile, coming from Ferrari, take charge of car development from the Silverstone factory. "The changes he implemented weren’t impulsive; they were based on careful analysis of what could make us a more efficient team," Slack explained. "It’s not my specialty, but I know we haven’t excelled at car development in recent seasons.

Part of the issue may have been that personnel traveling to 24 races were also supposed to be responsible for car development, which is quite challenging. I believe other teams have been organized in the manner that Andy has introduced," he added.

Slack elaborated: "How do you create a focus on long-term car development among a talented group on this incredible campus, while they are also attending 24 races? How can they manage everything else that occurs on the track? I think this strategy is very sensible, and Andy didn’t just guess his way through it. He took the time to analyze the situation, and I think this reflects the natural progression of our business as we continue to grow as a team."
