I’ve been evaluating the Garmin Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar smartwatch for six months and want to begin by stating that I am not a fitness influencer. Based on my appearance, you might not even assume I have an interest in fitness. Medical visits often start with nurses checking my vitals, inquiring if I'm feeling well due to my unusually low heart rate, which is typical for someone who spends more time typing than exercising. This makes me an interesting candidate to review a fitness device typically used by elite athletes, demonstrating to others how technology can simplify and even make exercise enjoyable.

If you’re reading this, it's likely you have a passion for cars. After just a few days of collecting data with my first smartwatch, I began to compare it with OBDII systems and the data logging tools I use for vehicle testing. Many are experimenting with various ways to gamify fitness, using everything from video games to social media to showcase their progress. None of these approaches engaged me much, but having access to real, scientific data has significantly shifted my perspective on fitness. The Garmin Fenix 7X elevated the experience compared to my Apple Watch. I’ve had several Apple Watches in the past, but from now on, I’ll be making comparisons with my current Ultra 2 model.

It’s important for me to clarify that this is a product review, and nothing here should be construed as medical or fitness advice. I share my experiences purely as examples. Companies like Garmin and Apple emphasize that they do not market medical or diagnostic devices and their data isn’t intended for medical purposes. Additionally, the size of a social media following does not equate to actual expertise. If you have health concerns, please consult a qualified doctor.

      The Summary

The Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar is currently priced as low as $619.99 on Amazon.

One notable feature of Garmin smartwatches is their battery life. If I use my Apple Watch for health data monitoring and occasional notifications, it typically requires charging every three days. In contrast, if I utilize the Fenix 7 similarly, it can last well over three weeks. This is largely due to Garmin’s transflective display, which reflects ambient light instead of relying on a backlight.

This type of screen consumes significantly less power than OLED displays and incorporates solar cells to extend battery life. If both watches start at a full charge and are used for workouts with continuous health and GPS tracking, my Apple Watch will need a recharging by the next morning. Conversely, the Fenix 7X can endure an entire week of workouts, general use, and sleep tracking on just one charge.

The 7X model comes with pre-loaded topographic maps and features dual-band GPS sensors. I have utilized it for day hikes and logging local walks. When hiking, you can set waypoints, pre-plan routes, and even navigate back to your starting point if you stray off course.

In addition to maps, the Fenix 7X allows you to log over 30 different preloaded activities. It covers the usual cycling, running, swimming, and hiking, but it also includes activities like ATV riding and surfing. It connects with various sensors; for cycling, it can read power meters and cadence. If you have a smart trainer, it not only records data but can also adjust resistance based on the workouts programmed into the watch.

As a gadget fan, I must admit the screen on the Garmin isn’t as vibrant or sharp as my Apple Watch. Garmin does offer models with OLED screens that look impressive, but the UI still doesn’t match the sleekness of a wrist-tablet experience. However, for outdoor use, the combination of physical buttons, connectivity, and extended battery life makes it a preferable option. Additionally, Garmin provides free fitness coaching and health monitoring software. To access workout plans and body battery tracking using an Apple Watch, you typically have to pay for supplemental apps.

I can use the Garmin Fenix 7X daily without needing to constantly invest money into it. It provides ample data to satisfy my needs as a data enthusiast. Garmin has recently released the Fenix 8, which features a microphone and speaker and is available with an AMOLED screen. If those features are essential to you, consider the latest model; if not, the Fenix 7 series remains available and is often discounted.

      The Purpose of a Smartwatch

It has been nearly five years since I started wearing a smartwatch upon my doctor’s recommendation. My first was an Apple Watch Nike. I was experiencing some unclear symptoms, and after various tests and wearing a medical-grade portable ECG known as a Holter Monitor
