David and Mick Schumacher could be rivals at Le Mans
We've already covered Ford's plans to build its own LMDh class prototype, which is set to debut in the WEC in 2027. The company hasn't given any additional details yet, but the German press is already speculating on what chassis, engine and drivers Ford will use in the project. Ford is considering Multimatic and Oreca as chassis partners. Most likely, the engine will be a 4-liter V8, which is now on the cars Ford Mustang GT3. Germany's Proton is being considered as the team. It already services racing Ford GT3 and is familiar with the LMDh class by working with client Porsche prototypes. However, much more interesting is the question of drivers. It is rumored that one of the contenders for a seat behind the wheel of the Ford prototype is David Schumacher, son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher. Ford has already signed him as a factory driver and he will drive a Mustang GT3 this season, but it has not yet been announced in which series. If David does well, he will get a seat at the wheel of a Ford in the LMDh class in the WEC and will go to the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he will have to compete with his cousin Mick Schumacher, the driver of the factory team Alpine.
The rivalry between Michael and Ralf Schumacher in Formula 1 has been uncompromising in its time, so a possible rivalry between their sons in the World Endurance Championship will only add to the intrigue.
