Wolff does not anticipate Mercedes achieving success until 2026.

Toto Wolff has tempered expectations regarding Mercedes’ 2025 Formula 1 season. After enjoying remarkable title success with Lewis Hamilton until 2021, the team and the seven-time world champion experienced a downturn in the new 'ground effect era.' Hamilton, now 40, has moved to Ferrari.

"I acknowledge the issues we have faced," team principal and co-owner Wolff told La Repubblica. "However, a close analysis of the data reveals that we were not the only ones to experience inconsistent performances in 2024."

Regarding Hamilton's prospects with Ferrari, Wolff remarked, "When given a competitive car, Lewis remains the best. We were unable to provide that for him. He is a driver who can contribute significantly to Formula 1 and the team that supports him; I have no doubts about that."

Wolff has replaced Hamilton with his young protégé, Kimi Antonelli, explaining his intent to avoid the mistake he made by allowing the then-teenaged Max Verstappen to be taken by Red Bull. The team principal stated he will keep the young Italian "under my umbrella" to alleviate pressure as he adjusts in 2025.

"Both Kimi and the team understand that they should not anticipate results before 2026," Wolff noted. "On that front, Valtteri Bottas has also returned to mentor Kimi and keep an eye on him. If anything happens before 2026, it will be a bonus," he added. "I would love to see an Italian driver win again—it’s been a long time since that occurred, and it would make for a great story."
