Briatore emphasizes that Alpine must compete for the championship in 2027.
Alpine is aiming for a few podium finishes in 2025, consistent top-three results in 2026, "and by 2027, we need to be competing for the championship." This statement comes from team advisor Flavio Briatore, who has recently brought the Italian oil company Eni back to Enstone and Formula 1. Following Alpine's dismal start to 2024 and the return of former championship-winning team principal Briatore as a significant advisor, the team has started to show improvement.
"We recognized what wasn’t functioning within the team," the 74-year-old Italian expressed to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Now that we’ve organized everything, we can focus on enhancing our performance." Briatore acknowledges that he has succeeded in reinstating a "racing team way of working" at Enstone. "In 2025, Alpine needs to consistently place in the top six, potentially contending for podiums," he noted. "We have significantly more aerodynamic potential than McLaren and Ferrari."
"By 2026, our goal is to be in contention for podiums in half of the championship races, and in 2027, we must be in a position to challenge for the title," Briatore further stated. Former team driver Gerhard Berger, who is familiar with Briatore, believes he is "exactly the right person" for Alpine at this time. "In a very brief period, he has managed to revitalize a team that had been stuck for years," he told Auto Motor und Sport. "Many have attempted this, but no one has progressed the team further."
"It only took Flavio six months," Berger remarked. "And I believe the situation will continue to improve. It was undoubtedly a tough choice to source engines from Mercedes (starting in 2026) rather than using Renault’s own engines, but in terms of sheer performance, it was likely the correct decision." Team principal Oliver Oakes mentioned to La Gazzetta dello Sport that Alpine fans should temper their expectations for significant advancements in 2025. "Our aim is to be in the top group, but we realize there are no miraculous solutions. We simply need to create a better car," he stated.
