Cadillac's confirmation for the 2026 grid is merely a 'formality'.
It "should not take too much longer" for Formula 1 to officially secure Cadillac's place on the 2026 grid. After a prolonged and contentious situation, and with Michael Andretti withdrawing from the effort, Liberty Media announced last November that "an agreement in principle" had been reached with GM and Cadillac. In January, an FIA representative mentioned that the governing body was "currently evaluating Cadillac’s entry," but no updates have emerged since then.
This week, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated that the process is nearing completion. "There is a formality related to the process that is almost done," he remarked. "An update must be provided in conjunction with the FIA, and whenever this is ready, there will be a formal announcement regarding what essentially has already been agreed upon. It shouldn't take too long," he added. "They will be prepared to compete alongside or against the other teams next year."
Although FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has always supported the addition of an eleventh F1 team, F1 and the current teams have been open about their opposition. Nevertheless, Domenicali expressed that he is "very, very happy" about Cadillac joining the grid. "GM wants to be a genuine constructor or manufacturer that will invest in our sport because they believe in the technological advantages F1 can offer their system," he explained. "So I’m extremely pleased that this is progressing, and I eagerly anticipate seeing them on the track competing with the other teams for a great championship."
