Ocon will not be utilizing F1's new driver cooling system.
Esteban Ocon has stated that he won't be using Formula 1's new 'cooling vest' when temperatures rise in 2025. Initially, the FIA aimed to make this new technology mandatory this year to safeguard drivers' health, but eventually reached a consensus with teams that its use should be optional as the innovation develops.
Haas driver Ocon has expressed his decision against using it. "There are tubes everywhere, which is acceptable," the tall Frenchman remarked. "There’s also one on the back, which is fine as well. However, there’s a large bulb on your hip.
"If it's positioned on the chest, it causes discomfort due to the belts. And if it's placed on the back, fitting into the seat becomes an issue.
"Currently, it's not functional," Ocon continued, adding that other drivers are experiencing "similar issues."
"It’s positive that a solution has been found and they’ve developed something, but at this time, neither I nor Ollie (Bearman) can utilize it. It’s overly large. You know how snug the seat is in Formula 1."
Reports suggest that drivers who choose not to wear the vest in extreme temperatures this year will need to add an extra 500 grams of ballast to their cars. The vest is set to become mandatory in 2026.
"It’s not really essential," Ocon acknowledged. "Sure, there are times when it might be needed. I’m not sure if there’s any ongoing discussion about it, but I believe that no one can currently utilize it.
"It’s not that I'm being difficult and refuse to wear it—on the contrary. It simply doesn't fit."
