Marko acknowledges that Verstappen is currently 'behind' Norris for '25.

Dr. Helmut Marko has provided a candid assessment of the current hierarchy as Formula 1 approaches the 2025 season. Following the only group pre-season test in Bahrain, the Red Bull advisor stated to Auto Bild: "(Lando) Norris is leading, with Max (Verstappen) right behind him, followed by Ferrari's (Charles) Leclerc and Mercedes."

Former two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen shares the sentiment of many pundits, believing that McLaren's Norris is the frontrunner heading to Melbourne. "I think Lando is poised to win," the Finn remarked to Corriere dello Sport. "The key question is what insights he gained from last year's title battle. Making mistakes is part of the learning process, but speed alone won’t clinch a win. Just look at Max—he secured victory last year despite the shortcomings in his car's development."

Nonetheless, Hakkinen emphasizes that this final season of the current chassis and engine regulations is set to feature a tight and fierce title race. "I could spend an entire day elaborating on why one driver might outperform another," he noted.

Hakkinen highlighted a specific challenge for the reigning four-time world champion Verstappen, particularly regarding the psychological and motivational aspects. "It won't be easy for him mentally," he pointed out. "While fans witness the races, tests, and interviews, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that goes unnoticed. You have to manage the pressure and cope with criticism."

Still, Hakkinen acknowledges that Verstappen has already become adept at handling pressure. "Max understands what’s required and he delivers. If I compare him to myself, Verstappen must perform in a Formula 1 era brimming with talent—from (Lewis) Hamilton to Norris and (George) Russell to Leclerc. He deserves a great deal of respect for that."
