Tsunoda would have found it challenging to deal with the 'pressure' from Verstappen.
Yuki Tsunoda may face challenges in staying in Formula 1 beyond the 2025 season. One challenge is that this year marks his fifth with Red Bull’s junior F1 team, and the opportunity at Red Bull Racing has been closed off for now due to Liam Lawson's promotion. Team advisor Dr. Helmut Marko mentioned that it was Tsunoda’s character, rather than his speed, that hindered his advancement. "Tsunoda’s temper has improved," he stated to Auto Motor und Sport, "but it hasn’t disappeared entirely. Last year in Mexico, as the decision-making approached, he had two completely unnecessary accidents. However, he was aware that the seat at Red Bull was on the line," Marko remarked. "This indicates he can still make errors under pressure. He is undoubtedly capable in terms of speed, but racing against Max (Verstappen) always brings pressure. Lawson understands he earned the seat because he is extremely mentally stable and grounded. He is expected to score points regularly, rather than focusing on Max. That is his current role. I believe he’s wise enough to recognize that."
Marko indicated that Tsunoda would not be called up to Red Bull Racing even if Verstappen or Lawson were unavailable for a race. "In that case, we have Ayumu Iwasa as our reserve driver," he added. "Arvid Lindblad has the points necessary for the super license, but he doesn’t turn 18 until September. Therefore, we are currently seeking an exemption from the FIA, similar to what (Kimi) Antonelli received. We see no reason why it shouldn’t apply to Lindblad as well."
Another significant concern for Tsunoda is the departure of his long-time sponsor, Honda, from Red Bull at the end of the year, and there are no available race seats at Aston Martin for 2026. Recently, Koji Watanabe, the chief of Honda Racing Corporation, suggested that Tsunoda might lose that support at the season's end. Some believe this could explain why Tsunoda decided to part ways with his management team over the winter, in anticipation of possible discussions with Cadillac regarding 2026. He stated in Melbourne: "I realize that my future relies on my performance. But it has always been this way. I can’t remain in the junior team indefinitely."
