Esteban Ocon: We have problems in fast corners
The Haas team is one of three that have not yet earned any points after the first stage of the season. On Thursday in Shanghai, Esteban Ocon, the team's driver, said that the lack of speed in Melbourne had come as an unpleasant surprise to the team.
Esteban Ocon: "It's no secret that the first stage of the season turned out to be difficult and disappointing for Haas. We were counting on a lot of speed, so its absence was a shock and an unpleasant surprise.
The team will continue to work hard, but we will only have one training session this weekend. But we will still try to evaluate what capabilities we have, what we have at our disposal, and try to optimize the car.
We will be competing on a stationary track this weekend, so it's interesting to see how it goes. However, due to the new asphalt, the uncertainty factor remains, but everything is on an equal footing. It should be an interesting weekend.
In the tests, we didn't see any particular signs that something was wrong with the car, but we must remember that the tracks in Bahrain and Australia are very different. In Melbourne, we found that the car has problems in fast corners – it lacks stability.
There were no problems with this in Bahrain, as there are more slow turns, which require acceleration efficiency at the exit. We're fine with that. There's only one really fast turn in Bahrain, the twelfth, but it's going at full speed.
I think our shape will be different depending on the track. Melbourne was one of the worst for us, but let's see if we face a repeat of the difficulties in China. There's new asphalt here, fast and long turns, so let's see if it affects us the same way it did in Melbourne. We still have a lot to figure out at the beginning of the season."
