Sainz: The car will undergo a real inspection in China
Carlos Sainz intends to forget about the setback that befell him in Australia as soon as possible and will try to do everything possible to make the results of the Chinese weekend, which includes the sprint, completely different.
However, the Spanish Williams driver prefers not to talk about how things will turn out in reality.
"To be honest, I don't know yet," Marca newspaper quotes Carlos. "The Chinese track is the first of the season to have such characteristics, i.e. there are long turns, during which the aerodynamic body kit of the car generates high–level downforce.
We haven't dealt with such turns yet, because there were a lot of hairpins and slow turns in Bahrain. And this track is more like the Catalan ring in Barcelona, and it is also different from the Australian one. Therefore, I believe that only now we will get the first more or less accurate idea of the effectiveness of the machine. In particular, we will be able to draw conclusions about which routes will be more suitable for us and which ones will be more difficult.
I've already seen the new track surface – my first impressions are not bad, and it looks like the grip here will be at a good level, although I'm not sure yet, because anything happens. But I want to say that it is here that the car will undergo a real check. If the FW47 performs well in Shanghai, it will mean that we have made a step forward in working with the chassis, and the car should work efficiently on any type of track.
But if we have difficulties here, then we need to continue upgrading the car, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's get to work, and then we'll see how things go.…
We have already had several meetings with engineers, including discussing the lessons we learned in Australia, and we have a number of ideas on how to proceed in order to achieve the best possible results in the qualifying finals when the car has a minimum of fuel in the tank and has soft rubber on it.
We'll probably try out some of these ideas this weekend - maybe they'll work, maybe not. But we have already gone through this, which means that we need to apply some other approaches that will allow us to make progress. Since there will be no more tests, we will have to try out certain solutions during the race weekends. Over the course of the year, we will make gradual improvements and adapt to the situation.
As for my driving style, we need to talk about a combination of different factors. Of course, after four years at Ferrari, my nervous system is tuned to a certain approach to driving a car. Some moments were very useful from the very beginning when I got behind the wheel of Williams, some definitely did not fit.
Something can be done by working with the settings, and this will help me show the best possible results. But some points can only be dealt with in the process of gaining experience, for example, how to work with rubber, or how the behavior of the car changes as the fuel in the tank becomes less, etc. All this will become clear only in the process of racing."
