Frederic Wasser: It's important to stay calm right now
Frederic Wasser, commenting on the results of the Shanghai sprint, first of all noted the ability of Lewis Hamilton, the winner of Saturday's race, to take care of the tires. At the same time, he reminded that after the first success, you should not indulge in excessive emotions.
"I think the most important thing during the race was to work properly with the tires," the Ferrari team principal said on Sky Sports. "I'm not going to underestimate Lewis' achievement, but when you're in the lead, it's much easier to protect the tires, and I think he did a great job of it.
At the beginning of the race, Verstappen, who was chasing him, attacked much more aggressively, but closer to the finish, Lewis was clearly faster than Oscar Piastri and Max.
Of course, it is now important to have a good qualifying session in order to gain an advantage in tomorrow's race. For example, if you compare Hamilton's situation with how Leclair ran the race, then Charles had a harder time during the sprint because he was driving in traffic. Therefore, he had to lag behind George Russell a little, then he caught up with him again, however, when he was driving in a zone of turbulence behind the Mercedes, it was difficult to overtake.
In general, today's qualification is important, but we'll see how we do it. Yesterday, when working with soft tires, we were in good shape, but we must remember that today the picture will be somewhat different, because the condition of the track surface is improving rapidly.
McLaren had more difficulties today than we did, which happens if you can't find the right approach to tires. We can recall that they were faster than us in the second part of qualifying yesterday, just because we didn't manage to bring the tires up to optimal operating temperatures. But the picture can change from session to session, so stability will be one of the key conditions for success in the championship.…
It's important to stay calm right now, because just because we're successful today doesn't mean we'll become world champions. But our business is already going better than it was a week ago."
