Piastri: I'm thrilled to have won the pole!
McLaren made very effective use of the experience gained in the first day and a half of work on the Shanghai circuit, and according to the results of the main qualifying weekend, both drivers of the British team entered the top three. At the same time, Oscar Piastri won the pole position for the first time in his career.
Oscar Piastri (1st): "I'm glad that everything worked out, because at first I didn't have that feeling. I only managed to improve noticeably in the qualifying final, but it was really difficult in the first two sessions. But in the third session, the car seemed to come alive, and I drove faster.
In the end, I'm happy with how I did, although there were some minor mistakes in all the attempts, but I'm just thrilled that I won the pole!
It's a lot of fun to work on this track! The new asphalt surface provides excellent grip, and the riders don't need anything else. The only problem is that if the clutch suddenly goes missing, trouble starts right away.
You saw that the cars were often destabilized during the weekend, there were a lot of U-turns, so it's not easy to drive. But if you managed to do everything right, then driving feels great!
We have to try to keep the lead in tomorrow's race. After the sprint, I was more or less satisfied, we did everything we could. I would have been more happy if I had moved up one place, but considering how the short race on Saturday turned out, I shouldn't have wanted more in this case either.
In my opinion, we have understood a lot today, figured out how to act, learned a lot, and I will try to apply all this experience tomorrow."
Lando Norris (3rd): "When you miss pole, it's always a cause for frustration, but today Oscar deserved it, and I'm glad that my team-mate won qualifying for the first time in his career.
I made a few mistakes again, and that's how it works this weekend. Nevertheless, today I feel much more comfortable driving, we have found a more correct direction in working with the car, especially compared to yesterday, when I had a lot of difficulties. But now everything went even better than it was this morning, so I'm not too upset.
We made a lot of changes to the settings after the sprint, because we were way behind then, so we had to work hard in preparation for qualifying, but I hope this will help us in tomorrow's race as well. Anyway, let's see how it goes on Sunday."
