Max Verstappen: I attacked at the limit in qualifying
Max Verstappen has won qualifying at Suzuka and is starting from pole position on the Japanese circuit for the fourth time in a row. For the Red Bull Racing driver, the result was largely unexpected, and now he intends to fight for victory on Sunday.
His teammate Yuki Tsunoda completed qualifying in the second session, showing the fifteenth time.
Max Verstappen (1st): "Yes, I'm surprised too. In qualifying, we tried to do everything in our power to get the best balance out of the car, but it wasn't easy. We improved a little bit in each session, and I think that played a role.
I did the last fastest lap as fast as I could. I attacked at the limit, maybe even exceeded it somewhere. The result was an incredible reward for our efforts.
The Japanese track is just incredible, especially the first sector. The new asphalt provides even more grip.
There is no doubt that in the race I will do everything to keep the McLaren drivers behind. Getting back on pole is the best thing that has happened to us so far, but the team and I are looking forward to the race. The weather may play a role, but we will do our best."
Yuki Tsunoda (15th): "My car's settings are different from Max's, but I chose this level of downforce myself, and the speed in the first session was enough to reach the final.
The result was a surprise to me. I didn't feel the pressure, although the last lap was exciting, but this year I don't feel the pressure, and I enjoy the fight. I had the pace, so I didn't expect it to end like this.
The positive results include the fact that I began to understand the car. She has a very narrow working range, but now I feel confident and know what needs to be done in the future."
