Carlos Sainz fined 20,000 euros

The stewards of the Japanese Grand Prix fined Williams racer Carlos Sainz 20 thousand euros.

Before the start of the race in Suzuka, Carlos was late for the Japanese national anthem ceremony, for which he was fined. Sainz is obliged to pay half of the imposed fine now, and half has been postponed for twelve months and will be paid in case of repeated violation.

The stewards in their decision noted that the amount of the fine for being late for the anthem ceremony is 60 thousand euros, but Sainz was given a smaller amount because he had mitigating circumstances. Carlos explained to the stewards that immediately before the anthem he was experiencing discomfort due to stomach problems, which is why he was late for the start of the ceremony.

During the Suzuka race weekend, drivers complained to the FIA about queues at public areas in the paddock and expressed concerns that there was a possibility of being late for the anthem ceremony.

However, the stewards' decision to fine Sainz specifically states that during Friday's briefing, the riders were reminded of the requirement not to be late for the start of the anthem as a sign of respect for the host country.
