Elbon: It wasn't easy, but we still scored points.
Before the start of the Japanese Grand Prix, Alex Albon said he would be happy if he finished in the same position as he started from, and he succeeded. Carlos Sainz finished 14th, but Williams CEO James Voules admitted that the team did not perform well during qualifying, and this did not allow the Spanish driver to start from higher positions, which predetermined today's result.
James Voules, team principal: "It's great that we scored a couple more points thanks to the fact that Alex ran the race quite confidently again and showed a steady pace. Almost all the cars finished according to the qualifying results, and I have to admit that we didn't do our best yesterday, which is why Carlos ended up in traffic.
It's the team's fault, but the good news is that Carlos showed a steady pace today, and I want to see what results we'll achieve in the next two races as soon as possible.
Of course, there is an incredibly intense rivalry in the middle group of teams, and the score is counting by milliseconds, so we must do everything in our power to fully unleash the car's potential in the upcoming stages of the season."
Alex Albon (9th): "We spent the whole weekend experimenting with gearbox settings and thought we had finally found an option that would suit us. But as it turned out, the impressions during qualifying were much better than they are today. In addition, the conditions on the track were such that it was not easy to drive.
During training on Friday, the wind direction suited us better, but on Sunday the picture was completely different. However, we still earned points! This means that even if everything is not optimal, we are still able to earn points.
Carlos Sainz (14th): "Unfortunately, as expected, the race was not easy - I was hampered by traffic in qualifying, and today it cost us dearly. In general, we still have to work on certain aspects of the qualification.
On the positive side, I think we had a good pace today. I was comfortable driving, I managed to do some good overtaking, and overall I got a lot of useful information during the race.
Now, the most important thing is that at the upcoming Grands Prix we will be able to build on the positive impressions we received this weekend and continue to make progress. I know that as soon as I start putting everything together, the results will immediately go up. In general, Bahrain is ahead!"
