Sainz: The problem with the car is innate

Carlos Sainz said that he drew Williams' attention to a fundamental flaw that, in his opinion, has been hindering the team for more than one year.

Although the team is preparing to shift its focus to building the 2026 car, the Spanish driver believes it is important to address the issue that is holding the team back now.

"Alex also feels this problem with the car, it is obvious to both of us, but he is already used to it and says that it is old and innate," Carlos shared, talking to the press in the Jeddah paddock. – This is a new problem for me, and I'm trying to change my piloting style and approach to settings in order to somehow get around it.

But it is important for the team to make improvements in this area, because perhaps this is the problem that has held back Williams' progress over the past few years. We have to deal with it, try to move forward in the modernization of the car, and try to use this experience in the transition to the new technical regulations.

The team is already putting a lot of effort into trying to understand the causes of this problem. Even if we do not plan to actively upgrade the FW47 chassis, I want to be sure that we will try to analyze both its strengths and disadvantages. At a minimum, we must do our best and figure everything out in order to apply this experience in creating future cars. And I am actively insisting on this..."

When Sainz was asked what exactly the problem was, he preferred to refrain from detailed explanations, and only said that it manifests itself at low and medium speeds.

"It seems that it mainly manifests itself in medium–speed and slow turns," he said. "As for more detailed information, I first have to ask James Voules if we can talk about this openly or not. I won't go into details today, but maybe we'll talk about it in more detail as the season progresses.

I made it clear to the team that if we can make improvements, we will be able to unlock the car's potential much more fully, and then we will move forward significantly. Experience tells me that it can take years to identify errors and accurately determine their probable causes, but this work is interesting to me, and this task motivates me."

Williams started the 2025 season well, the team already has more points than it had at the end of the previous season, but Alex Albon mostly earned them. Sainz beat his teammate for the first time in qualifying at the Bahrain stage, but during the race he could not avoid difficulties, and he withdrew from the race due to damage to the car.
